Uppingham School, founded in 1584, is a leading co-educational independent boarding school. Its 800 pupils, aged 13-18, are accommodated in 15 boarding houses, taught by over 20 academic departments, and participate in numerous extra-curricular activities such as sports, music, and drama. The built estate has 80 buildings, including teaching blocks, assembly buildings, boarding houses, staff housing, administrative and technical accommodation, and sports facilities. The School covers approximately 120 non-contiguous acres, almost one mile apart at its extremities and interspersed by town housing and retail properties.

Candidate profile:
Uppingham School is offering an exciting opportunity for an experienced Lead Cricket Groundsman to join a busy, close-knit Grounds Team where you will play a leading role in the maintenance of the School's cricket grounds and associated facilities. You will also have the opportunity to develop your career further in grounds keeping, helping to maintain the wider School grounds and sporting surfaces across the 120-acre estate. Your remit will include:

  • Playing a prominent role as Lead Cricket Groundsman;
  • Working closely with the current School Director of Cricket (former England International);
  • Working in close cooperation with the Grounds Manager and Deputy.
  • Extensive involvement in cricket surface provision and management;
  • Opportunity to prepare cricket surfaces for County Level cricket;
  • Being a highly-skilled and knowledgeable senior team member and cricket expert, helping to manage and allocate all associated departmental tasks and ensuring that they are actioned correctly and to high standards at all times;
  • Direct responsibility for several different grass squares, outfield areas, associated facilities, and landscaped areas;
  • Helping to maintain and improve the School's other sports grounds, associated sporting facilities, and pitches, including multiple natural and artificial playing surfaces.

    The successful candidate will have extensive experience working as a cricket groundsman. They will also possess significant knowledge and experience of cricket surface provision and management. They will also ideally be NVQ Level 3 Sports Turf Maintenance qualified or equivalent. The ability to remain calm in a busy and demanding environment, excellent communication skills, strong leadership skills and a flexible attitude to working hours are all essential.
