With more than a thousand trainees present at any given moment, the Indian Naval Academy is the largest of its kind on the Asian continent, and the 2nd-largest in the world. To support the physical and mental development of its cadets, the administration chose to install two brand-new artificial turf hockey fields.
With a rain season of six months, extreme heat in the other monts and intensive use, it's a hard place for grass to grow. The academy, located in the soutch of Inda, installed two artificial grass pitches of the Belgium company Lano Sports.
According to commander Rajesh Pillas, more than 100 recreational and professional competitions take place annually. It was important that the new hockey fields complied with international standards. The fields have already been extensively tested and received a global certificate from the FIH.
The winter monsoons made the installation of the new fields - which took place in December - far from easy. And the remote location of the academy made the challenge complete. 'There is not a single large city in the neighborhood: the transport of the materials was a feat', explains Pillas. 'Nevertheless, we managed to complete the installation on time in these complex circumstances. The smooth and pleasant cooperation with Lano Sports was crucial in this.'
According to Lano, the academy is already planning to equip four additional hockey pitches with Lano artificial grass.
